Deadly Kindy Burragah Celebrates Indigenous Literacy Day

Our Deadly Kindy Burragah jarjums celebrated Indigenous Literacy Day and Early Childhood Educators’ Day by launching their very own book. The Deadly Kindy Burragah class of 2020 wrote and illustrated Nyungai Ngullina Nyumbajaburuyah Buuragah, Our Day at Burragah Kindy. From morning circle time, outdoor play, making healthy food and getting creative, their kindy experience is documented in this beautiful and unique collection of artwork and stories featuring both Yugambeh language and English. Translated by Yugambeh Museum Language Officer Shaun Davies, the book celebrates and appreciates the experiences of each child. It also highlights their connection to culture and language. Shaun said he was grateful to the Burragah jarjums for giving him new words to translate with the assistance of his grandmother. In particular, translating all the delicious and healthy fruits, the jarjums eat every day, like blueberries, apples and bananas. He also did the honours of reading the book at the launch and teaching the jarjums some of the language. We know this connection to culture and language is important to our jarjums. It’s also one of the many things that makes our Deadly Kindys so special. Copies of the book are available to purchase via our website, with all profits going back to our Deadly Kindys.
